In Darwin’s Footsteps: Galapagos Islands with HX

Begin your adventure in the vibrant city of Quito, nestled in the lush Andean foothills at 9,350 feet above sea level. Quito's exquisite Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts well-preserved colonial architecture, colorful plazas, magnificent churches, and handsome monuments. Settle into your hotel and explore the city's enchanting streets.

Today, enjoy a guided tour of Quito’s remarkable Old Town, one of the largest and best-preserved colonial-era quarters in South America. Wander through cobblestone streets, admire the architecture, and sample delicious chocolate made from Ecuadorian cacao. Later, head to the iconic ‘Middle of the World City’ to straddle the Equator and capture the moment with your camera.

After breakfast, take a short flight to Baltra Island in the Galápagos archipelago. A transfer brings you to the port where your expedition ship, MS Santa Cruz II, awaits. Your first stop is Mosquera Islet, home to one of the largest sea lion colonies in the archipelago. Stroll across sandy dunes and look out for Blue-footed Boobies and Sally Lightfoot crabs.

Visit the Cerro Colorado Tortoise Reserve, a breeding center for the endangered giant tortoise. Here, you'll also encounter the San Cristobal Mockingbird and lava lizard. Depending on the time of year, explore either Cerro Brujo or Punta Pitt, both offering unique wildlife experiences and the chance to see different species of boobies.

Start your day with a scenic nature walk on the blissful beaches of Santa Fe, home to the endemic Barrington land iguana and a colony of sea lions. Enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, or a glass-bottomed boat trip. After lunch, head to South Plaza Island to spot frigatebirds, Swallow-tailed Gulls, and land iguanas among a dazzling array of flora.

Explore Santa Cruz Island, visiting the Charles Darwin Research Station to see giant tortoises and Darwin’s famous finches. After lunch in the lush highlands, enjoy another activity such as mountain biking or visiting a sugar plantation, all while giant tortoises shuffle about munching on grass and wallowing in pools.

Cruise to Española, the archipelago's most southerly island, renowned for its extraordinary birdlife. Look out for Nazca Boobies, Blue-footed Boobies, and Waved Albatrosses. After lunch, visit Gardner Bay and Osborn Islet to spot sea lions, mockingbirds, and finches, with opportunities for snorkeling or kayaking.

Discover Eden Islet, where you can spot Galápagos green turtles, rays, and reef sharks. Swim, snorkel, or explore the reefs from a glass-bottomed boat or by kayak. After lunch, sail to North Seymour to observe colonies of Blue-footed Boobies, Swallow-tailed Gulls, sea lions, and marine iguanas.

Disembark at Baltra Island and transfer to the airport for your flight to Guayaquil or continue to Quito for more adventures.
