Frequently asked questions

What to take on holiday in Dunedin?

If you’re heading to Dunedin, warm clothes are a must! Even in summer it can get a little chilly. The rest of your packing list will depend on what your ideal travel itinerary looks like, but comfortable and sturdy walking shoes are a must for exploring.

Where to go on holiday in Dunedin?

The beauty of Dunedin is that you can roll up with an empty itinerary and fill your days strolling around the Botanic Garden, marvelling at old-world architecture and museum hopping. If your hammies need a stretch, limber up to tackle Baldwin Street – the world’s steepest residential street – before quenching your hard-earned thirst at Speight's Brewery, a historic brewery in the city centre. Just outside of Dunedin you’ll find Otago Peninsula, which is home to an array of wildlife as well as the incredible Larnnach Castle, a Victorian-era mansion, making it well worth the trek.

When is the best time to visit Dunedin?

The good news is that Dunedin is a great destination to visit pretty much year-round, so it all depends on what brings you here in the first place. If you’re keen for some fun in the sun, summer (December to February) is perfect for outdoor activities and beach days. Autumn (March to May) is slightly cooler, making it ideal for hiking, cycling and wildlife watching. Winter in Dunedin (June to August) can be summed up in two words – cold and wet – but on the flip side, it's a great time to visit if you're interested in winter sports. Spring (September to November) sees the city's gardens and parks come to life with colourful wild blooms.
