What are the latest Japan travel restrictions?

Following gradual easing of restrictions, Japan’s latest update came into effect on 11th October, making it easier for independent travellers to visit from overseas, including the UK.

Effective from 11 October 2022

  • International tourists will no longer need to book a packaged tour to enter Japan
  • International tourists from specific countries (including the UK) will be eligible for visa-free travel again
  • There will no longer be a cap on the number of travellers allowed to enter Japan each day

While there are no official COVID-related restrictions on travel, dining out or other activities, social distancing, mask-wearing and other basic precautions are highly encouraged. And, if you’re really stuck, be sure to give us a call on 0808 258 1177, check our COVID Travel Restrictions Map, or visit the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for the most up-to-date guidance.

What Do You Need To Do Before Travelling To Japan from the UK?

Travellers who have been triple vaccinated with two doses of AstraZeneca, Pfizer or Moderna vaccines (or one of Johnson & Johnson) plus a booster shot from Pfizer or Moderna,  do not require a negative PCR test to enter Japan. If you are a vaccinated traveller, you can fast track entry into Japan with the MySos system.

If you can’t provide a valid vaccination certificate, you will need to be able to show a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of your departure for Japan.

Finally, while this isn’t necessarily a requirement, we always recommend taking out an appropriate travel insurance policy at the time of booking to protect yourself from the unexpected while overseas. Visit our Help Centre for more information about booking travel insurance.
